This course is designed to equip healthcare staff with the knowledge and practical skills needed to perform suctioning safely and effectively. Learners will gain a clear understanding of when suctioning is required, the different techniques and equipment used, and how to ensure the dignity and safety of individuals throughout the procedure.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
✔ Understand the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system
✔ Recognise when suctioning is required and the risks of delayed intervention
✔ Perform oral, nasal, and tracheostomy suctioning safely and confidently
✔ Correctly use and maintain suctioning equipment
✔ Follow infection prevention and control measures
✔ Monitor and support the individual before, during, and after suctioning
✔ Record and escalate concerns in line with care plans and policies

Duration: Half day (3–4 hours)
Delivery: Face-to-face or blended learning (theory + practical)
Assessment: Practical demonstration & short knowledge check
Certification: CPD-accredited certificate of completion
